Who is Kartini? Kartini was born into an aristocratic Javanese family. Her father, Raden Mas Sosroningrat was regent of Jepara. Her mother had been his first wife, but not important: at this time was polygamy normal use under the aristocracy.
Kartini experienced firsthand why the conflicts and suffering of polygamy may result.
Kartini was born into a time when women received little or no education. Kartini was the (Dutch) elementary school visits to them 12 years old. She learned, among other well- Dutch speaking, something for Javanese women at that time was extremely unusual. After her 12th year she was isolated at home, a common practice for young girls to prepare for their wedding. It was a form of imprisonment: the girls were not allowed to just go out until they were married and authority over them was transferred to their spouses. Kartini's father gave her some privileges in time, such as embroidery lessons and visits to special events.
Because Kartini could speak Dutch, she could go home to learn from Dutch books (Dutch scholar was time for Indonesians is the only gateway to the Western culture) and correspond with Dutch pen-friends. One of them, a girl named Rosa Abendanon, was a fierce defender of Kartini. Her letters, which contain her opinions against the unfair treatment of women, were published in the Netherlands.
